Common Problems with AHU Systems and Their Solutions

Jan 06, 2025 Leave a message

Air Handling Units (AHUs) are a critical component of HVAC systems, responsible for regulating and circulating air to ensure optimal indoor air quality and temperature and humidity control. Although AHUs are highly reliable, they can experience some common issues over time. If left unaddressed, these problems can impact the overall performance of the system and even lead to energy wastage. This article explores some common issues with AHU systems and their solutions, helping facility managers and technicians improve the efficiency and extend the lifespan of these units.

1.Unstable Airflow

Unstable airflow is one of the most common issues in AHU systems. When the system's airflow is inconsistent, it can result in inaccurate temperature and humidity control, negatively affecting indoor comfort.

Solution:

Check the Filters: Start by checking whether the air filters are clogged. Clogged filters restrict airflow and prevent the system from functioning properly. Regularly replacing or cleaning filters is an effective way to maintain stable airflow.

Inspect the Fans: The fan is the core component responsible for air movement. If the fan blades are damaged or accumulate dust, airflow can be reduced. Regular maintenance of the fan ensures that the blades and motor operate smoothly.

Adjust Airflow Control: If the system is equipped with Variable Air Volume (VAV) controls, adjust the airflow control valves to regulate the air volume and ensure the system operates according to demand.

2.Temperature and Humidity Instability

One of the primary functions of the AHU is to regulate indoor air temperature and humidity. If the AHU fails to properly manage these parameters, it could be due to a malfunction in certain components of the system.

Solution:

Check the Heating and Cooling Coils: Blocked or damaged heating or cooling coils can lead to inaccurate temperature control. Regular inspection and cleaning of these coils ensure proper water flow.

Inspect the Humidity Control System: If the AHU is equipped with humidifiers or dehumidifiers, check their operation. Humidifiers may fail due to water supply issues or scaling, while dehumidifiers may not work effectively due to blockages in the condensate drainage system.

Ensure Sensors Are Functional: Temperature and humidity sensors may become inaccurate due to dust, dirt, or aging. Regularly calibrating or replacing faulty sensors is key to maintaining accurate readings.

3.Excessive Noise

Noise issues not only affect indoor comfort but can also negatively impact the surrounding environment. Noise in AHU systems usually originates from fans, air flow restrictions, or aging components.

Solution:

Inspect the Fans and Ductwork: Fans can produce noise if the blades are unbalanced, dusty, or improperly installed. Ensure fan blades are properly balanced to reduce vibrations and clean any debris from the ductwork to allow for smooth airflow.

Use Noise Insulation Materials: Use soundproofing materials around the source of the noise, particularly near fan and duct connections, to reduce noise transmission.

Perform Regular Maintenance: Conduct regular comprehensive inspections and maintenance of the AHU system, especially the fan, motor, and other operating components, to ensure smooth operation and minimize noise.

4. Declining Energy Efficiency

Over time, the energy efficiency of an AHU system may decline, resulting in increased energy consumption. This can be caused by aging components, system dirt accumulation, or improper operation.

Solution:

Clean the System: Regularly clean all components of the AHU, including filters, coils, fans, and ducts, to prevent dust and dirt buildup, which can reduce efficiency.

Inspect and Adjust Control Strategies: Ensure that the system's control strategies are optimized, such as adjusting temperature setpoints or fan start/stop schedules. Smart control systems can automatically adjust the system based on actual demand, improving energy efficiency.

Consider Replacing Aging Components: If certain components, such as fans, motors, or compressors, are old and inefficient, consider replacing them with energy-efficient alternatives to improve overall system performance.

5. Indoor Air Quality Issues

AHUs are not only responsible for temperature and humidity control but also for improving indoor air quality. If the filters and air circulation are not functioning properly, harmful substances such as dust, bacteria, and viruses may not be effectively removed from the air.

Solution:

Replace with High-Efficiency Filters: Use HEPA or higher MERV-rated filters to effectively remove harmful substances from the air, improving indoor air quality.

Regularly Check the Air Exchange Rate: Ensure the AHU provides sufficient ventilation to avoid stale indoor air and rising CO2 levels.

Inspect Airflow Pathways: Check that the airflow paths within the AHU are unobstructed to ensure smooth air circulation.
