What is a Fan Coil Unit?

A Fan Coil Unit (FCU) is the core terminal air handling equipment of water-based central air conditioning systems. Widely deployed in hotel guest rooms, office buildings, hospital wards, retail stores and finished residential apartments, it serves as the fundamental device enabling independent temperature control for individual rooms. Simply put, the central air conditioning main unit generates chilled and hot water, while fan coil units complete heat and cold exchange in separate rooms. The two work in tandem to form a complete water-cooled air conditioning system.

A fan coil unit mainly consists of heat exchange coils, centrifugal fans, low-noise motors, condensate drain pans and casings. Driven by the fan, indoor air circulates continuously through the heat exchanger fitted with copper tubes and aluminum fins. In summer, chilled water flows through the exchanger to cool and dehumidify the air; in winter, heating hot water is circulated to warm the airflow, steadily maintaining the preset indoor temperature. Equipped with a three-speed air volume regulator, each unit supports independent on/off operation and separate temperature adjustment. Zoned operation delivers superior energy efficiency, which is the key reason FCUs have long dominated the commercial HVAC market.

Classified by installation style, fan coil units fall into multiple categories: concealed horizontal units, exposed horizontal units, vertical units, cassette ceiling units and wall-mounted units. Concealed horizontal models are installed inside ceiling cavities with only air outlets exposed, leaving interior decoration intact, making them the most widely selected type for engineering projects. Exposed units require no ceiling renovation and are ideal for old building retrofits and temporary premises. Four-way cassette ceiling units are mostly used in large open-plan offices and shops, delivering even air distribution and seamless integration with interior finishes. Heat exchange coils with different static pressures and tube rows can meet operating conditions involving varying duct lengths and cooling/heating loads.

As an enterprise specializing in HVAC terminal manufacturing, Shanghai Aike has long focused on structural optimization and process upgrading of fan coil units. Beyond standard basic structures, the company optimizes overall unit design from three core dimensions: heat exchange efficiency, operating noise and anti-leakage & anti-condensation performance. Heat exchange components adopt seamless red copper tubes paired with hyperbolic louvered aluminum fins to boost air turbulence and improve heat transfer efficiency. The integrally stamped volute, matched with moisture-proof low-noise motors, keeps overall operating noise at an industry-leading low level for Aike Air Conditioning products. The integrally molded seamless condensate drain pan with full thermal insulation effectively eliminates risks of water dripping and surface condensation, supporting stable long-term operation in humid environments.

In production, Shanghai Aike relies on high-precision sheet metal processing equipment to rigorously control unit dimensions and airtightness. Continuous structural R&D has yielded ultra-thin unit models compatible with ceilings in buildings with limited floor height. Dust-proof structures are optimized for medical and cleanroom projects to reduce dust accumulation inside units and safeguard indoor air quality. For years, the company has combined standard models with non-standard customized solutions to cover all types of HVAC projects, including residential, commercial and industrial supporting facilities.

Thanks to flexible installation options, independent zoned control and stable, reliable operating performance, fan coil units remain irreplaceable terminal equipment for water-based central air conditioning systems. As building energy efficiency standards grow increasingly stringent, fan coil units keep evolving toward higher heat exchange efficiency, lower noise output and reduced energy consumption, consistently delivering stable and comfortable indoor temperature control for all types of buildings.
