Overview
Air Handling Unit (AHU) with a Direct Expansion (DX) Coil is a type of HVAC system designed to condition and distribute air efficiently in commercial, industrial, and residential buildings. Unlike traditional AHUs that use chilled water for cooling, AHUs with DX coils use refrigerant to directly cool the air before it is distributed through the duct system. This system is commonly used in spaces where a chilled water system is impractical or unnecessary.

Key Features
Air Handling Unit (AHU)
Houses the major components, including filters, fans, dampers, and coils.
Distributes conditioned air throughout the duct system.
DX Cooling Coil
The DX coil contains refrigerant that absorbs heat directly from the air.
The heat exchange process cools the air before it is distributed.
Compressor
The heart of the DX system, responsible for compressing and circulating the refrigerant through the system.
Located in the condensing unit, which is usually installed outdoors.
Expansion Valve
Regulates the flow of refrigerant into the DX coil.
Ensures that the refrigerant enters in a low-pressure, low-temperature state for optimal cooling.
Condenser
Located in the outdoor condensing unit, where the refrigerant releases absorbed heat.
Uses air-cooled or water-cooled technology to remove heat from the refrigerant.
Evaporator Fan
Draws warm air from the building over the DX coil.
The air is cooled and then pushed into the supply duct system.
Filters
Trap dust, debris, and contaminants before air enters the cooling coil.
Improve indoor air quality and protect the AHU components.
Applications
Commercial Buildings
Offices, malls, and hotels where centralized cooling is needed without a complex chilled water system.
Industrial Facilities
Used in factories and production areas where cooling is required for both human comfort and machinery operation.
Healthcare Facilities
Hospitals and laboratories require precise temperature and humidity control.
Data Centers
Critical for cooling IT equipment and maintaining optimal server performance.
Educational Institutions
Schools, universities, and training centers benefit from energy-efficient cooling solutions.
Residential Complexes
Apartment buildings and high-rise residential structures where centralized air conditioning is needed.
