Overview
water-cooled air handler is a type of air handling unit (AHU) that uses water to absorb heat from the air and cool it. Unlike air-cooled systems, which rely on refrigerants to cool the air, a water-cooled system uses a water loop that transfers heat away from the building. This type of system is often used in commercial and industrial buildings where energy efficiency and cooling capacity are crucial. Water-cooled systems can also be integrated with other cooling technologies, such as chilled water systems or cooling towers, to further enhance performance.

How Does water cooled air handler Work?
●Water Cooling System:
Water is chilled at a central cooling plant or cooling tower. This chilled water is pumped into the air handler where it flows through the cooling coils.
The chilled water absorbs heat from the air passing over the coils. As the air cools, the heat is transferred to the water.
●Air Circulation:
The fan in the air handler draws warm air from the building into the unit. The air is then passed over the cooling coils filled with chilled water.
As the air passes over the coils, it loses its heat to the water, cooling the air before it is pushed back into the conditioned space.
●Condensate Removal:
As the air is cooled, moisture in the air condenses on the cooling coils. This condensate is collected in a drain pan and directed to the drainage system to prevent water buildup inside the air handler.
●Water Return:
After absorbing heat from the air, the chilled water flows back to the central cooling system or cooling tower for re-chilling. This cycle continues as the system works to cool the air inside the building.
Key Components of water cooled air handler
●Cooling Coils (Water-Coils):
Water-cooled air handlers have water-coils that replace the typical refrigerant coils in air handling units. These coils are filled with chilled water or water from a cooling tower.
As air flows over the coils, heat is transferred from the air to the water, cooling the air before it is distributed into the building.
●Fan/Blower:
The fan or blower inside the air handler circulates air over the cooling coils. It draws in warm air from the building and pushes the cooled air back into the space. The fan can typically operate at variable speeds to meet the cooling demands of the space.
●Air Filters:
Air filters are incorporated into the air handler to remove dust, dirt, and other particulates from the air before it is cooled and distributed throughout the building.
●Water Supply and Return Lines:
Chilled water is supplied to the air handler from a central cooling plant or cooling tower. After the water absorbs the heat from the air, it returns to the central system to be re-chilled or sent to the cooling tower.
●Drainage System:
Condensation from the cooling process is collected in a drain pan and directed to a drainage system. This system prevents moisture buildup and potential water damage.
●Control System:
The air handler is typically controlled by a thermostat or a building management system (BMS). The control system regulates the temperature of the air and ensures that the fan operates efficiently based on the demand.
●Chilled Water Pump (for chilled water AHUs):
The chilled water pump circulates water from the cooling plant to the air handler and back. It ensures that there is a constant supply of chilled water to absorb the heat from the air.
Advantages of water cooled air handler
●Energy Efficiency:
Water has a higher thermal capacity than air, allowing it to absorb more heat with less energy. This makes water-cooled air handlers more energy-efficient than air-cooled systems, especially in larger buildings or facilities with high cooling demands.
Using chilled water from a central system or cooling tower can lower operational costs, especially when cooling towers are used to reject heat.
●Reduced Environmental Impact:
Water-cooled systems tend to be more environmentally friendly than traditional air-cooled systems, as they require less energy for the same level of cooling. Additionally, water used in the system can often be recycled or reused in other cooling applications.
●Lower Noise Levels:
Water-cooled air handlers generally operate at lower noise levels than air-cooled systems because the compressors and cooling components are often located away from the conditioned space, reducing noise transmission.
●Flexible System Design:
Water-cooled systems can be designed to meet the needs of a variety of building types and layouts. The ability to centralize cooling in a single system or use modular cooling towers provides flexibility in system design and expansion.
●Space Savings:
By using water for cooling, these systems often require less space than comparable air-cooled systems, making them ideal for installations where space is at a premium.
●Scalability:
Water-cooled air handlers can be easily scaled up to meet the growing cooling demands of larger buildings or facilities, making them suitable for future expansion.
